What's a mini-split?

Mini-splits are heating and cooling systems that allow you to control the temperatures in individual rooms or spaces.

Mini-split systems have two main components -- an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor air-handling unit(s) (evaporator). They are easy to install usually requiring only a three-inch hole through a wall for the conduit; which houses the power and communication cables, copper tubing, and a condensation drain line, linking the outdoor and indoor units.

Mini-split heat pumps are not only great solutions for whole home or new constructions but make good retrofit add-ons to houses with “non-ducted” heating systems, such as hydronic (hot water heat), radiant panels, and space heaters (wood, kerosene, propane). They can also be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible, and energy efficient new homes that require only a small space conditioning system.

Outdoor Unit

The HotSpot Energy  ACDC12C/ACDC18C/DC4812VRF is a split unit, also referred to as a "mini-split" with the outside unit mounted on an outside wall.  The outdoor unit contains the condenser, condenser coils and compressor.

Indoor Unit

The indoor unit contains the evaporator, evaporator coils and fan that circulates the air inside the room where it is mounted. The distance between the two units is limited by the line set that comes with the unit this is pre-charged with refrigerant for easy installation.  Inquire about longer line sets preinstalled at the factory.  The combination of the indoor and outdoor unit is equivalent in operation to a standard household Air Conditioner, but on a smaller DIY scale.  With any of the units the approximate square footage that can be cooled is 500-700 sq. ft.  Many other factors, such as available sun, insulation and desired temperature can all affect the ability to cool.

How Hybrid Solar Works

During the day, the solar air conditioner receives DC power directly from solar panels without needing an inverter or controller. The DC solar power directly replaces the equivalent amount of AC power from the grid and can cut daytime energy costs by 100% percent. Perfect for cabins and other off-grid situations, these units can be used for Boats and Sailboats. One customer sailed from the Keys to Caicos and said it was an excellent solution to keep their cabins cool for nothing! 

At night, the air conditioner runs from an off grid inverter or from grid power, 208 to 240 VAC with a maximum energy draw of 7 amps when operating, 0.3 amps on standby.

When the Hybrid-Air is co-running on solar, the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) rating is 75, and is 22 at night on grid power.  The higher the number the more energy efficient the unit.  SEER ratings for conventional air conditioning and air-source heat pump systems manufactured today range from 13 SEER to 24 SEER.  A SEER of 75 is AMAZING!

Hybrid-Air is a heat pump, so it can also be operated for heating. The Coefficient Of Performance (COP) as a heater is 3.66, another rating of efficiency.

DC4812VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) operation

Using technology similar to SEER 27 air conditioners, the DC24 compressor runs on DC power at various frequencies and refrigerant flow depending on cooling load. The all-DC solar air conditioner uses DC power directly without needing an inverter or other AC power source. Due to solar voltage fluctuations the unit cannot connect directly to solar panels and must have a stable source of power such as batteries.
Depending on conditions, the entry-level setup can operate up to 10 hours per day using 4 x 250w panels. A configuration of 6 panels can provide up to 15 hours of daily operation, with 8 panels yielding up to 20 hours. A 10 panel configuration can handle up to 24 hours per day operation. Batteries and charge controller must be sized appropriately.
